Bairns Blether

Ages 60+

A monthly community engagement initiative designed to address social isolation among residents aged 60 and above.

Recognising the challenges faced by older adults during the COVID-19 lockdowns, this program provides a welcoming environment for those seeking to reconnect with their community. Through a diverse array of activities, informative presentations, and social interactions, the initiative has quickly become a valuable resource for participants looking to forge meaningful connections. The programme takes place at Falkirk FC’s stadium on the second Monday of each month from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., offering a consistent and accessible opportunity for community members to gather. Participants are welcomed for a modest £5 fee, which includes refreshments, fostering an inclusive and hospitable atmosphere.

Comprehensive activities and local partnerships

Each session features a well-curated selection of activities and presentations aimed at both education and entertainment. The Foundation collaborates with various local organizations, inviting representatives from the fire service, first aid providers, and other community groups to share valuable information with attendees. These presentations cover crucial topics ranging from home safety measures to basic first aid techniques, empowering participants with practical knowledge. To balance the educational components, the program incorporates recreational activities such as quizzes, card games, and dominoes, promoting friendly competition and cognitive stimulation. Football enthusiasts particularly enjoy the dedicated sessions for sharing memories, where both long-time Falkirk FC supporters and newcomers can reminisce about notable matches and players from the club’s history. Additionally, participants are treated to an exclusive stadium tour, providing a unique behind-the-scenes perspective of the grounds.

Fostering community bonds

With a significant portion of participants living independently and a considerable number facing disabilities, this initiative serves as a vital social outlet. The programme facilitates connections and interactions that may not naturally occur in everyday settings, offering participants opportunities to exchange stories, share laughter, and cultivate relationships that extend beyond the confines of the stadium. For many individuals, the prolonged social isolation resulting from COVID-19 restrictions has had enduring effects, making it challenging to reestablish social routines and relationships. This programme presents a pathway to reintegration, cultivating an environment where attendees feel valued and at ease. Whether engaged in conversation over refreshments or participating in a friendly game of dominoes, participants are discovering avenues for connection that might otherwise remain inaccessible.
